Why New Echota Matters

Why New Echota Matters

New Echota became the Cherokee Nation’s capital in 1825, and its history connects government, publishing, law and Cherokee removal.

The Cherokee national legislature established the capital here. New Echota later became the site of the first Indian-language newspaper office, a court case that reached the U.S. Supreme Court, and the signing of a treaty relinquishing Cherokee land claims east of the Mississippi River.

Georgia State Parks describes New Echota as the place where Cherokee removal on the Trail of Tears officially began. The National Park Service identifies it as a certified site on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail and a Georgia State Park managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The site includes 12 original and reconstructed buildings, along with a visitor center, film and a nature trail.

Start at the visitor center, where interpretive exhibits and a 17-minute film introduce the site, then continue among the buildings.

Georgia State Parks describes a 1.5-mile nature trail leading to New Town Creek and a small beaver pond. Other activities include self-guided tours, guided tours by schedule, fishing and field trips. The field-trip description gives a three-quarter-mile walk around the historic grounds to see the 12 buildings.
